Super Size Me
Review Posted 10/15/04

Two out of three Americans are overweight or obese, but where does personal responsibility end and corporate responsibility take over? On the heels of recent lawsuits against McDonald's, director Morgan Spurlock takes a hilarious and often terrifying look at the effects of fast food on the human body. Spurlock spends a month of eating nothing but McDonald's food, ordering everything on the menu at least once and "super-sizing" his order if asked.

Cady's Take:

"Super Size Me," is a film that's every bit as tasty as junk food. In July 2003, Morgan Spurlock vowed to eat nothing but food from the McDonald's menu for a full month. His mission statement specified that he would eat nothing else and that if the cashier or the person at the drive-up window asked, "Do you want me to super-size that?" the answer would always be an emphatic and definite "yes."

Supervised by three doctors, a nutritionist, and also observed by his girlfriend, a professional vegan cook, Mr. Spurlock, a fit, active New Yorker, happily set out to ruin his health, and succeeded beyond his wildest expectations. The results are both entertaining and scary. He gains over 25 pounds, dramatically increases his cholesterol and trashes his liver to the point of seriously jeopardizing his future health and well-being. Other side-effects of the junk food binge included chest pains, depression, headaches, sugar/caffeine crashes, heart palpitations and his girlfriend is appalled at the deterioration of his sex drive.

In one of my favorite scenes Spurlock stops an average American family in front of the White House and asks them to recite our "Pledge of Allegiance", unable to complete it in full he then asks them to sing the McDonald's "Special Orders" jingle. The group seamlessly wails the ditty without any hesitation.

"Super Size Me" works best when looking at the nation's school lunch programs. Personally I believe that Super Size Me should be mandatory viewing in our schools. With America being the fattest country in the world with 100 million overweight people and 400,000 individuals dying each year from obesity related ailments, this is a problem that cannot be ignored.

Care for a happy ending? McDonald's ended up doing away with its "super-size" meal and, the day before the film's opening, introduced a new "healthier" menu, which includes bottled water. Coincidence? Spurlock thinks not.

Kyle's Take:

If the pound per day of sugar and the twelve pounds of fat consumed during Morgan Spurlock's thirty days on a McDonald's only diet were not enough to make me never, ever want to eat there again, it was certainly the sight of him tossing up the first of nine supersized meals he was to eat.

Even more compelling were Spurlock's discoveries in our schools - even the USDA food plans are high in sodium, fat, and refined sugar. And do NOT get me started on the "junk lines" that are filled with Little Debbie snack cakes, pizza, and french fries as far as the eyes can see. America needs to eat LESS. America needs to eat HEALTHY. America needs to WALK a little for goodness sake.

The problem is not dieting but our actual diets. We consume, consume, consume and then we just sit there! Statistics like the average American only walks 5000 steps per day, and that we are the fattest nation in the world are gruesome. So is the knowledge that only six - that's right six: one, two, three, four, five, six - items on the McD's menu do not contain sugar. Three of them off the top of my head - Diet Coke, sausage, and french fries. Yay. Thanks, McDonalds. Even their salads are filled with fat and sugar. Granted, they have introduced healthier meals - some even have little pedometers - but c'mon now. We really are out of control.

"Supersize Me" is an exercise in shock-value. Very few people eat at McDonalds three times a day (much less for thirty days straight) but I think we all know someone who eats there once a week - and that's not good. "Supersize Me" is good - fast food is not.

Rent this movie. Then eat an apple. I have to go the gym now.
