The Longest Yard (2005)

Review Posted 09/30/05

It's the inmates vs. the guards in this remake of the hit 1974 comedy. While doing time in the Big House, pro quarterback Paul Crewe (Adam Sandler) persuades fellow convict and former gridiron coach Nate Scarborough (Burt Reynolds) to prepare a group of jailbirds for a match against the screws. But Paul, Nate and the rest of the team are in for a little surprise when game time rolls around. Chris Rock, James Cromwell and Michael Irvin costar.

Cady's Take:

Adam Sandler plays Paul Crewe, a former NFL player who's is thrown into a Texas slammer and is forced to put together a football team to take on the prison guards.

The Longest Yard's game plan is to take every joke and exaggerate it until it's no longer funny. Such as poking fun at the posse of gay inmates who dress like women and flirt with all the other prisoners, or the running gag where a man's steroids are replaced with estrogen pills and he starts acting like a woman…. if you are older than 13 this just isn’t that humorous. I mean how many times are we supposed to enjoy watching someone get hit in the groin???

Sadly, you are never asked to be invested in the outcome of the final game, which is what the entire movie leads up to. The dialog and situations are all ludicrous and the offensive sexist and homophobic humor is simply ignorant and not entertaining.

When Adam Sandler isn't interesting enough to hold your attention in an Adam Sandler movie, something is definitely wrong.

Kyle's Take:

"The Longest Yard" is a remake of an original that I'm embarassed to admit I have yet to see. Perhaps "saddened" is better than "embarassed" because this version was so bad I am not sure that, in spite of assurances that the original is wonderful, I have serious doubts that I will now be able to enjoy it. Adam Sandler who has so much potential for good acting and great comedy has provided us with a mindless comedy that cheerfully disregards prison realities and falls back on unfunny stereotypes of prisoners, guards, and corrections administrators.

The plot is simple: Paul Crewe (Sandler) is a disgraced quarterback sent to prison after a drunken car chase with police. Once in prison he is put in charge of a rag-tag bunch of inmates for the return of the inmate/prison guard football game of days past. Chris Rock plays Caretaker, or as I like to call the character - Chris Rock. A funny guy who uses his quick wit to get out of sticky situations, mostly of his own creation. Burt Reynolds plays fellow inmate Nate Scarborough, a former coach who is recruited to assist Paul. The team stinks at first, then they get inspired...yadda, yadda, yadda...a big payoff final game at the end of the movie and we're done.

Some of the jokes are funny but most of them are not. I like a good comedy, and I like a good movie where a sporting or athletic event provides a framework for a larger message. "The Longest Yard" is neither.
