The Perfect Man (2005)

Review Posted 11/11/05

Teenager Holly (Hilary Duff) decides to take matters into her own hands after her mom, Jean (Heather Locklear), suffers yet another painful breakup with another loser guy. To boost her mom's self-esteem, Holly invents a secret admirer -- the perfect man. She eventually borrows her friend's hunky Uncle Ben (Chris Noth) to play the suitor in order to keep her mom's spirits up, but her scheme nearly backfires when the real perfect man materializes.

Cady's Take:

Heather Locklear plays mom, a middle-aged woman who is desperately trying to find a good man. Apparently she is really bad at it because she routinely hooks up with losers. When they inevitably break up, she falls apart and uproots her daughters, 16-year-old Holly (Hilary Duff) and 6-year-old Zoe (Aria Wallace) and moves somewhere new, usually several states away.

The gang winds up in Brooklyn, where Holly becomes convinced that the best way to keep her mother anchored is to concoct the perfect man. So, she decides to model “Mr. Right” on her best friend's uncle, Ben (Chris Noth), a sexy, restaurant owner. She sends her mom flowers and writes her love emails signed from this secret admirer. Soon enough Holly finds herself resorting to increasingly desperate measures to keep the ruse alive. Blah Blah Blah…..

“The Perfect Man” is a mess from the very beginning. The dialogue is foolish, the plot ridiculous and the characters are like cartoons. I simply cannot tolerate Hilary, she is just plain lame. I kept wondering why on earth someone would cast this annoying teenager, and then I remembered - Perfect Man was produced by her mother. This rental was perfectly awful.

To me, this film felt artificial. Not a single conversation felt real, yet it shows a great deal of imagination and is without a doubt an original tale.

Kyle's Take:

What is it with Hollywood these days? Why can't we crank out any good, clean, and FUNNY family-friendly comedies? It's a little depressing. Same thing on television - the sit com is practically dead. I just want a little laughter. "The Perfect Man" does not even deliver a little.

The biggest problem with "The Perfect Man"? The cast! I like most of these actors. I like Heather Locklear. She rocked on Melrose, and I even liked her on Spin City even though it was not a show that was on my "much watch" list. And she's turned in some great performances in TV movies as well. She is a really effective actress who can do campy, comedy, and drama. I wonder why she isn't on "Desperate Housewives" - she would be great! While I am no Hillary Duff fan (easy on the veneers, Hil) she does not make me want to scratch out my own eyes like some other starlets (Lindsey Lohan). Chris Noth...between his Mike Logan from "Law and Order" and his "Mr. Big" from "Sex and the City" I am not sure why his chemistry fails to translate to the big screen.

This is your standard fix-'em-up screwball comedy, where the kids want the mom to just find the right guy and be happy already! Of course hijinx ensue and that is where the hilarity is presumably supposed to enter but nothing about this movie delivers at all. The performances are impossible to review because the material is just terrible. What else can I say? Rent season 1 of Melrose for your Heather fix.
