The Forgotten |
| Review Posted 02/18/05 |
A desperate mother tries to prove the existence of her missing son in this chilling
psychological thriller. Unable to cope with the loss of her 8-year-old boy,
Telly Paretta (Julianne Moore) seeks counsel from a psychiatrist (Gary Sinise),
who tells her that her son was merely a figment of her imagination. After meeting
another parent (Dominic West) with the same story, Telly sets out to uncover
the truth. Also stars Alfre Woodard.

Cady's Take: |
It's
been over a year since the death of Telly's (Julianne Moore) son
Sam, and she is still having a hard time coping. She believed he
had been involved in a plane crash with 9 other children until
both her husband (Anthony Edwards) and her psychiatrist (Gary Sinise)
tell her that she never had a son, that there was no plane crash,
and that the boy only existed within her own delusional mind.
Racing to discover the truth, Telly contacts Ash (Dominic West),
the father of another child who died in the crash, and the two
set out to find answers , all the while avoiding an intrepid police
detective (Alfre Woodard), a squad of NSA goons and a mysterious-and
seemingly indestructible-man who may not belong to this world???
At first, the movie teases viewers with the "Is she crazy
or isn't she?" question, which was somewhat intriguing, but
that aspect of the story is dropped disappointingly quickly. The
Forgotten was missing two very important elements, the story, and
a plausible ending.
This was not even marginally entertaining.
Julianne Moore you have now starred in two of the worst movies
I have ever seen, Safe & The
Forgotten!!! Please forget about renting this 90-minute disappointment.

| Kyle's Take: |
Telly
(Julianne Moore) is distraught over the death of her son. She
looks at his pictures and drawings, she thinks about him all
day, every day until one day - it's all gone! All
the photographs, all the clothes and toys, everything is simply
gone. Her husband Jim (Anthony Edwards) and her therapist Dr. Munce
(Gary Sinise) inform her that this child was imagined, and that
she has been imagining his entire life for nine years. Oh, and
absolutely no one else she knows remembers her having a child either.
No one.
This poses problems on a lot of levels and
I don't just mean for Telly - this is a problem for us as well. Who is chasing Telly,
and her neighbor who lost his daughter in the same plane crash
she believes killed her son? Why are there government agents chasing
them all over town while they run around looking for their kids?
Why are government agents in movies like this always so unbelievably
incompetent? Are real government agents this unbelievably incompetent?
You can see where this is heading. "The Forgotten" is impossible
to review without giving away plot points that will basically ruin
the movie for you. Unfortunately watching the movie ruins the movie
for you, so it is something of a catch-22.
If you do not find it hard to believe that
our government would spend millions of dollars and manipulate
the minds of millions of citizens for the worst imaginable "secret experiment" ever,
if you think that it is possible your local library is keeping
alternate versions of the daily newspaper in stock "just in case" something
needs to be erased from history at the drop of a dime, and if you
have no problem wrapping your brain around the concept that a soccer
mom can outrun half a dozen Secret Service, FBI, and/or CIA agents
at any given moment, in spite of the fact that she just found out
she has been imagining her own child's existence for nine years, "The
Forgotten" is the movie for you. It was not, however, the movie
for me.
