We Don't Live Here Anymore

Review Posted 1/27/05

Two married couples (Mark Ruffalo and Laura Dern, Peter Krause and Naomi Watts) who have been close friends for years find that dynamic irrevocably changed when two of them (Ruffalo and Watts) have an affair. Things get even more complicated when their spouses find out and have an affair of their own. John J. Curran directs this well-acted drama based on stories by Andre Dubus ("In the Bedroom").

Cady's Take:

We Don't Live Here Anymore is an intimate drama of marital infidelity, an anatomy of adultery. It offers a glimpse into four lives connected by friendship, family, desire and desperation.

Jack (Mark Ruffalo) and Hank (Six Feet Under's Peter Krause) are best friends. Jack is married to Terry (Laura Dern); Hank is married to Edith (Naomi Watts). Jack & Edith are having an affair. And because the women are close also, each act of adultery deceives not only a spouse but also a friend.

These couples don't really know how to love, or have forgotten what they once knew; and sexual desire has become their only way of feeling. It is almost as though they cheat out of desire to punish their spouses for their own unhappiness. The characters share an innocent belief in the right to pursue happiness, and the equally naive expectation that such a state is their due.

I thought it was amazing that this movie didn't pose any easy answers or attach a happy ending, just like life. The film's honesty is what makes it so captivating. We Don't Live Here Anymore has some of the greatest performances I have seen in a long time, especially Ruffalo and Dern who are simply mesmerizing.

Kyle's Take:

Pluses: All star cast - Mark Ruffalo, Peter Krause, Naomi Watts, and (my favorite) Laura Dern. This movie has a lot of energy, the performances are wonderful and the direction is outstanding.

Minuses: Who really acts like this? What couples are this articulate, and this bent on maximizing the pain for those around them? I found the attitude of the Krause character did not ring true for me, and since I am only marginally fond of Naomi Watts I was not endeared to her character either.

Overall: Laura Dern turns in a scathing performance as Terry, a wife who begins an affair with the husband of her husband's mistress. Ruffalo/Dern and Krause/Watts are friends and lovers, coworkers and betrayers. This is fairly labyrinthine for a cast with only four major players. The film is charged with emotion, most of which emanates from Dern's performance. Deep and true, she portrays a woman seared by the pain of disappointment and longing.

You can watch this and enjoy it. "We Don't Live Here Anymore" is a movie about dialogue, so if you are up for some action this isn't the movie to rent this weekend.
