Envy
Review Posted 10/15/04

When Nick Vandermark (Jack Black), one of a pair of major doofuses, becomes stinking rich by selling an invention, he finds his lifelong bond with his best friend and neighbor, Tim Dingman (Ben Stiller), breaking almost beyond repair. Seems Dingman (who works at the same company as Vandermark) is crazy with envy . go figure. Christopher Walken co-stars, and Barry Levinson directs.

Cady's Take:

Tim Dingman (Ben Stiller) and Nick Vanderpark (Jack Black) are longtime best friends whose tight-knit families, including wives Debbie (Rachel Weisz) and Natalie (Amy Poehler), live across the street from each other in the Valley.

Nick is a dreamer with a penchant for coming up with ideas for inventions and Tim is the realist who shoots them all down. Nick's latest notion, "VaPooRize", is an aerosol spray that will make doggie doo literally disappear. Nick offers Tim the chance to invest in the project, but Dingman understandably dismisses it as nonsense. Anyway, the stuff works and Nick becomes a zillionaire,

Because they want to remain Tim's neighbors, Nick and Natalie build a Disney-esque mansion on the suburban site of their original home, casting a literal shadow over Tim. They install a merry-go-round in the yard for their children and buy them a beautiful white horse as a pet. Nick also sports a Lamborghini and stretch limo, whose vanity plates read "Caca King" and "Poo Czar."

The green-eyed monster consumes Tim and his wife resents him for passing up the chance of a lifetime. Jealousy turns to mischief when he meets a mysterious hobo named the J-Man (Christopher Walken) who convinces him to "shake things up" and get back at his friend for flaunting his material wealth. Tim takes him up on the offer and a series of consistently unfunny mishaps ensue including Tim accidentally landing a fatal arrow in Nick's beloved white stallion.

The comedy in Envy is limp and Stiller's character is cold and unlikable right from the start. I believe that Jack Black has great potential, but whatever the future holds, he's taken a giant step backwards with "Envy." By the end of this film I wished I had my own can of vapoorize to make this movie disappear!

Kyle's Take:

I would say it is pretty hard to critique any movie with Ben Stiller and Jack Black, just because they are so funny regardless of what they are doing. That is not to say they are not good actors in their own right. Ben Stiller is phenomenal in "Permanent Midnight" where he plays a strung out Hollywood type on a downward spiral. Not to mention Jack Black manages to bring real depth and charm to even his goofiest characters. So "Envy" gets two automatic buckets of popcorn - one for Stiller, one for Black.

Tim (Stiller) and Nick (Black) are a couple of middle class guys when Nick strikes it rich off a stupid invention "Vapoorize" that sends dog poo into another dimension, making the doggie bag obsolete. Tim passes on the venture and then has to deal with a best friend who just wants to share his fortune with his neighbors - and makes Tim feel like a failure on a daily basis.

The movie moves to-and-fro and we lose the main storyline for a bit, and of course Christopher Walken jumps in as a looney stranger with odd, existentialist theories. I can not decide whether I think Walken's career of late is a medley of charming oddballs or a complete and total breakdown of communication of his agent, but at any rate in this case he is more distracting than entertaining.

I would say wait until this one comes to Comedy Central.
