| Just Married |
| Review Posted 9/11/03 |
Wedded bliss doesn't come easily for Tom (Ashton Kutcher)
and Sarah (Brittany Murphy) in this romantic comedy.
After falling in love at first sight, they decide to
get married, even though they come from opposite worlds:
He's an alpha male from a blue-collar family; she's
a blue-blooded writer with a free spirit. When they
go on their honeymoon, their differences bubble to the
surface and threaten to shorten "happily ever after."

Cady's Take: |
Ashton
Kutcher (TV’s That '70s Show) plays Tom Leezak, a quirky late-night
radio traffic reporter and Sarah McNerney (Brittany Murphy) is a young
free spirit and daughter of one of Beverly Hills’ richest tycoons.
They meet, they move in together, they get engaged- it’s your
typical boy gets girl, boys loses girl movie. I believe it’s
been done before! The moment they say, “I
do,” everything goes wrong. The message- a perfect relationship
is ruined by marriage. Personally, I hope married life isn’t
anything like the bit of hell portrayed in Just Married. Despite
an occasional chuckle at Kutcher’s expense and Murphy’s
inherent cuteness, Married is just a boorish mess. The film has
the age group of 13-21 written all over it.
Kutcher and Murphy are two attractive, likeable
actors with great potential, but their skills are wasted here. Murphy
has done much better in serious roles, such as 8 Mile and Girl Interrupted.
From the moment they get on the plane for their honeymoon little
incidents start to reveal an emerging strain in their relationship.
Basically, it's the snowball effect where one minor mishap seems
to take on a major crisis. The trip reminded me of National Lampoon's
European Vacation- minus the laughs.
It's fun and light-hearted, but nothing special.
This movie is good candidate for a date movie- just make sure you
finish your homework before you pop in this DVD.

When
a friend recommended I see “Just Married” I laughed.
Even when I saw the previews I thought this movie looked dumb. I
have no problem with screwball comedies as a rule, however I do
require that some feasible storyline accompany the physical comedy.
Ashton Kutcher plays Tom, a radio traffic reporter
who likes sports, pool, and beer. Brittany Murphy plays Sara, a
(nice) rich girl who falls for Tom for no particular reason that
I could observe. Tom and Sara get married and go on their honeymoon
in Italy where they get an awful rental car, which eventually gets
pushed off a cliff, get kicked out of their hotel, and then (horror)
Sara’s ex Peter follows them to Italy. I think you are probably
getting the idea. Basically the problem is that “Just Married”
does not know what it wants to be about. There is no rhyme or reason
to the screwy things that happen, and they seem to happen purely
to move the plot along to the next screwy thing.
Take another screwball comedy I happen to
love, “Some Like It Hot.” Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis
play musicians looking for jobs when they accidentally witness the
St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. The only job available is with
an all-girl band. The boys dress as girls and head to Florida with
the band, seeking escape from the mobsters and surrounded by beautiful
women they can’t touch. It’s outrageous but it is a
story! “Just Married” is simply a string of mishaps
with some words in between. I liked the performances of Kutcher
and Murphy – they were dating during this movie, which provides
some genuine warmth. These two are attractive, appealing, and charming
and I can recall at least two genuine laughs. I will not recommend
this movie, but if nothing else looks good you can pick it up and
have a chuckle.
