Yates County Patrol Car on FireOn July 4th at about 9:10 PM the Yates County dispatchers called out the Potter Volunteer fire department to a reported motor vehicle fire on State Rt. 364 west of Wilkins road near the Lafler farm. On scene witnesses reported that the vehicle was fully involved within minutes and that traffic was blocked. Potter’s Engine 38 responded within five minutes to put out the fire as the fire police shut down the road. The fire was reported to be knocked down by 9:30 PM. The vehicle was a county patrol vehicle towing a boat, which was unhooked and pulled away. Behind the burning vehicle was another county patrol vehicle which was towing a jet ski. No damage was reported to that vehicle. The SUV was towed to the impound lot at the sheriff’s office for the fire investigation team. In another incident, unknown if related, a sheriff’s vehicle was reported to have received heavy front end damage. At the time of the incident many were in route to see the Branchport fireworks, but instead witnessed a different attraction. Story & photo courtesy of Wilson Simmons, Yates County Gazette
