Cayuga Lake Wine Trail’s Grow & Show Contests

Finger Lakes Region, Cayuga Lake, NY (July 29, 2010) – Along the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail, throughout the months of August, September and October we are hosting our Wine & Herb, Grow & Show Contests. At our Wine & Herb event this past spring we handed out herbs and a few veggie plants as part of our event giveaways. We have drafted nine different contests for four of our veggies (zucchini, pumpkin, tomato and potato) and one herb (basil) contest. These contests are designed to encourage people to return and visit the wineries during our harvest season. Anyone who has a green thumb can participate so make sure to bring in your finest produce.August 7 Swedish Hill Vineyard: Jack Ass Day with Doobie, their donkeyContest: Zucchini that’s closest in length to Doobie’s tailSeptember 11 Hosmer Winery: Some Like It Hot!Contest: Basil Pesto Taste OffSeptember 11 & 12 Cobblestone Winery: 5th Annual Grape Stomping FestivalContest: Best Decorated Potato (painted, carved or dressed)September 12 Lucas Vineyards: German FestivalContest: Best German Potato SaladSeptember 18 Montezuma Winery: Harvest HoedownContest: 1) Best Pumpkin Pie & 2) Potato Bocce ContestSeptember 18 King Ferry Winery: 3rd Annual Fall Arts FestivalContest: Largest Tomato by WeightSeptember 18 & 19 Six Mile Creek Vineyard: 23rd Anniversary Harvest FestivalContest: Best Tasting Zucchini BreadSeptember 25 Knapp Winery: Fall FiestaContest: The Best Tasting SalsaOctober 30 Americana Vineyards: 8th Annual Halloween SpooktakularContest: Best Jack O’ Lantern CarvingOur first contest takes place at Swedish Hill at their 2nd annual Jack Ass Day on Saturday, August 7th from 12:00 noon to 5:00 pm. Jack Ass Day is a celebration of their famed mascot, Doobie the donkey. Boogie to LIVE Country/Rock music by City Limits, chow down on BBQ food or homemade ice cream from the Cayuga Lake Creamery (fee for food) and play some lively games (sure to bring out the “jack ass” in everybody). Also bring a zucchini from your garden to see if it’s longer than the length of Doobie’s tail. The winner receives a prize! Plus, enjoy a glass of Doobie Blues, Jack Ass Red or many other wines. Best of all, visit the winery’s real “Jack Ass”—Doobie, our donkey! We will have a country/western theme this day, so feel free to dress with the theme! There is no admission fee so come and get in on the fun! The tasting room and gift shop will be open and there will be wine discounts and specials galore.Visit us in September for Harvest Hoopla events and Grow and Show Contests.
