Anthony Road wines win gold, silver in Florida

PENN YAN, NY ­ Some gold and silver from a Florida wine competition brightened up some winter days at the Anthony Road Wine Company this month. The Seneca Lake winery¹s 2008 Vignoles Trockenbeeren Martini Reinhardt Selection won a Gold Medal at the Florida State Fair International Wine and Grape Juice Competition in Tampa. And Anthony Road¹s 2008 Cabernet Franc/Lemberger blend received a Silver Medal at the Florida competition, held Feb. 10-12. The Anthony Road awards were among 150 medals captured by New York wines at the 23rd annual competition in the Sunshine State, according to the New YorkWine & Grape Foundation. More than 1,000 wines from all over the United States and abroad were entered in the Florida contest¹s commercial competition. Anthony Road¹s 2008 Vignoles Trockenbeeren is part of the winery¹s Martini-Reinhardt Selection Series. The winery¹s owners are Ann and John Martini and the winemaker is Johannes Reinhardt. The winery¹s tasting notes describe the Vignoles Trockenbeeren as follows: “Vibrant notes of mango, dried apricot, orange peel, pineapple with lighter hints of noble rot. On the palate, characters of crème brulee, Myer lemon,and baked pear wildly appear. Underlying notes of golden delicious provide a balance of acid which carries through the lingering finish.” The wine has a residual sugar level of 26.5 percent and costs $75 a bottle. The winery¹s 2008 Cabernet Franc / Lemberger blend has a residual sugar level of 0.0 percent and costs $17.99 a bottle. The winery¹s tasting notes: “Characters of dark cherry, plum and mocha. Fragrant hints of cocoa and black pepper are prominent in the nose. A delightful red that is medium bodied red with smooth, silky tannins.” One of the judges in the Florida competition was Jim Trezise, president of the Canandaigua-based New York Wine & Grape Foundation. The competition issponsored by the Florida Grape Growers Association, which was established in 1923 to serve farmers and hobbyists interested in growing grapes in Florida. Anthony Road Wine Company has been making Finger Lakes wines since1990, when the Martinis opened their winery on the western shore of Seneca Lake withwines crafted from the 1989 crop. Anthony Road celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. The winery is located off Route 14, about 10 miles south of Geneva.
