The City of Auburn is conducting its first Downtown Brownfields Program Meeting on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 from 6:00pm-7:30pm at the Underground Café, 144 Genesee Street. The community is asked to attend and participate in the discussion about properties within the City that are abandoned or underutilized where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by potential environmental contamination. This program is being funded by a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Brownfield Assessment Grant. The Downtown Brownfields Program target area includes the Auburn Business District and the Owasco Riverfront. This area consists of single-family homes, multi-family residences, small commercial operations, and large industrial facilities. Over half of the target area properties can be characterized as vacant, abandoned or underutilized and likely to have been impacted by historic releases of hazardous or petroleum substances. Currently, the City has identified potential brownfield properties within the target area and is soliciting community involvement to expand this list as well ascontribute to revitalization and redevelopment decisions of these properties.
