Route 96 crash sends 6 to the hospital

Seneca County Sheriff’s Office reports that Sheriff’s Deputies investigated a personal injury auto accident at the intersection of State Route 96 and State Route 336 that sent 6 people to the hospital.A pick up truck operated by Matthew S. Campbell age 21 of 1399 Yellow Tavern Road Waterloo was east bound on State Route 336. After stopping Campbell then proceeded east into the path of a car being operated north bound on State Route 96 by 76 year old James A. Shepherd of 28 Auburn Road Seneca Falls. After the collision both vehicles came to rest in the ditch on the north side of the road. Both Shepherd and his passenger Rodney S. Shepherd age 54 of 4 Hawley Street Seneca Falls were trapped in their vehicle for approximately 45 minutes. Firefighters from Fayette & Varick Fire Departments extricated both from the vehicle.They were then treated at the scene by Ambulance crews from North Seneca, South Seneca and Finger Lakes Ambulance, then flown by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital. Campbell was also treated at the scene by the emergency medical personnel and flown to Strong Memorial by Guthrie air ambulance. 3 other occupants in Campbell’s vehicle, Daniel M. Kennedy age 16 of 9 Barham Ave Waterloo, Kyle S. Merkley age 21 of 157 Fayette Street Palmyra, and Bradley M. Welch age 20 11 Grove Street Geneva were also treated at the scene by the emergency medical personnel then transported to Geneva General Hospital.Traffic was detoured for about 1.5 hours while Sheriff’s Deputies investigated the accident.Charges are pending as Sheriff’s Deputies continue with the investigation.
