SFCC retains Canal Cup vs. Silver Creek

The annual match play event between the top golfers at Seneca Falls Country Club and Silver Creek was held on Saturday, August 13, 2011 at both locations in northern Seneca County. The SFCC team currently held the cup heading into Saturday’s competition.The Seneca Falls Country Club golfers successfully retained the Canal Cup by winning the matches by a 7.5 to 4.5 final tally. The competition was split between the two courses, with SFCC hosting six matches, and Silver Creek hosting six matches simultaneously.At Silver Creek, the team of Cliff Stein Jr. and his father, Cliff Stein Sr. finished with 1 point after winning the first match against Jimmy Williams III and Don Johnson but dropping the rematch. Norm Sharman and his son Ben Sharman split against one of the SFCC’s strongest teams that paired 9-time club champion Mark Hylwa with the reigning club champion, Jim Sandlas. The team of Ed Boudreau and Wayne Stoutner brought home 2 points for the SFCC going undefeated at Silver Creek.Just a few miles away at Seneca Falls Country Club, SFCC took 3.5 points of the 6 available points. Leading SFCC was the team of six-time club champ Steve Hyde and Chuck Ehresman took two points winning both matches. Arthur Lyons and Dan Kernan took just one-half point on their home course losing one match and halving another against Mike Burdsall and Jody Benedicks. In the matches at SFCC featuring both team captains, Doug Brown and Ben Wong split with Jeff Kapps and Gary Millerd.The matches, normally held in October, were held in August this year. No word yet on the date for next year’s matches.
