Man arrested on multiple Seneca Co. robberies

Seneca County Sheriff’s Office reports that on 11/20/2011, at 12:00 PM, Investigators arrested John R Bastien, age 22 , no permanent address, on several charges after an investigation spanning several days. The arrest stems from a joint investigation by the Sheriff’s Office, Waterloo Police Department and the New York State Police.On November 14th 2011 Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a robbery at a local Seneca Falls business. Money had been stolen from a cashier using physical force. Video and other evidence was obtained. It was discovered that the suspect had also been involved with a grand larceny that had occurred at a Village of Waterloo business on November 9th 2011 being investigated by the Waterloo Police Department. The suspect was identified as John Bastien and was actively sought but his location remained unknown.On November 17th the suspect struck again committing an armed robbery at the Waterloo Prime Outlet Mall, in the Town of Junius, where a cashier was held up with a knife. The New York State Police responded to this incident and it was determined that the crime also involved John Bastien.On November 18th 2011, Sheriff’s Investigators, along with officers from the Waterloo Police Department and the New York State Police, developed further information and conducted surveillance on possible witnesses. The suspect was located at a Town of Waterloo residence and taken into custody without incident. At the scene of Bastien’s arrest Sheriff’s Investigators discovered the clothing that the suspect wore during the robberies.During questioning it was found that Bastien had committed yet another crime on November 10th 2011 where he had stolen money from a shopper’s purse at a Town of Seneca Falls business.On November 18th, 2011, Bastien was arraigned by the Waterloo P.D. on their Grand Larceny Charge in the Village of Waterloo Court. Bastien was committed to the Seneca County Correctional Facility on $10,000 cash, $20,000 bond. On November 20th 2011 Sheriff’s Investigators charged Bastien with Robbery in the third degree, Petit Larceny and Harassment for the November 14th Robbery. Bastien was also charged with a count of Petit Larceny for the November 10th theft from a purse. He was arraigned in the Town of Seneca Falls Court and committed to the Seneca County Correctional Facility on an additional $10,000 cash, $20,000 bond. Charges on the November 17th Robbery at the outlet mall are pending by the New York State Police.Sheriff Stenberg credited excellent cooperation between the police agencies as a key factor in ending Bastien’s crime spree.The Sheriff advised that all citizens should be extra vigilant during the Holiday Season and take care with their purses, wallets, property and cash.
