Danielle Fuss Finally Clinches Girls State Golf Title

Coming into the final round of the Junior Girls Amateur Championship Danielle Fuss was determined to be inconsistent. More specifically, inconsistent with history, not her golf game. Fuss has been to the final day before, many times in fact, only to come up short. But this year was different and after the first round of 77, Danielle persevered through a treacherous course to post a two-over 74, which was good enough to win her the state title. “I just had a few stupid mistakes on the front but really tried to focus on the back, play the course and not worry what everyone else was doing.” Her mental change appeared to have tremendous effects, including an incredible fifty foot putt on fifteen that she made for birdie. “Mentally I was thinking ‘just get it there.’ If it didn’t hit the hole it would of gone far by but luckily it was dead center.” By the time Fuss walked off the course and knew her fate, her wall of focus fell down and emotion surged through. Fuss’ journey to take a title of her own was complete and finally, in her last year of eligibility as a junior, everything went the way it was supposed to. And as she said, “It feels really good to finally be in first.”Although it was Danielle Fuss’ day to take home the Betty Deeley Trophy, a valiant effort was put forth by all the girls in the field including the tied second place finishers Larissa Carter and Sarah Bothner. Carter’s final round was remarkably similar to the previous day with a general mix of birdies, pars and bogeys and one hole that was a struggle which resulted in a score of 78. Bothner had a copy-cat round of 78 today as well, with the only difference being one more bogey. To wrap it all up, Fuss finished first with a total score of 151 (+7) and tied for second came Larissa Carter and Sarah Bothner at 155(+11). Fourth place honors were awarded to Christine Schmitt at 158 (+14) and tied for fifth was Kristin Powers, Jennifer Lee, and Elizabeth Gudas at 159 (+15).
