Errors plague DDays in loss to Scrappers

The Auburn Doubledays (30-22) committed four errors for the second night in a row, losing to the Mahoning Valley Scrapppers (25-27) on Saturday, 9-2, in front of 1,788 at Falcon Park. The Doubledays have now committed four errors in a game five times this summer.Mahoning Valley took a lead right away in the top of the first. With one out LF Logan Vick walked, and then stole second while catcher Charlie Valerio was at the plate. Valerio ended up hitting a single to left, which drove in Vick for the first run of the game. The Scrappers lead grew to four in the third thanks to another single by Valerio, which ended up driving two runners home. Valerio came around to score in the third on a wild pitch from Doubledays starter LHP Brett Mooneyham (1-2).Auburn was able to get one run back in the bottom of the fourth. Two walks and one hit batsman to three of the first four hitters loaded the bases with one out. That allowed SS Wes Schill to drive home DH Chris Marrero from third with a groundout to second. However, Mahoning Valley responded the next half inning with a run of their own to re-take their four-run lead. Vick hit a one out double to right, moved to third on a groundout to short, and then scored on an error by 1B Shawn Pleffner on a missed catch at first that would have ended the inning. The Doubledays final run came in the bottom of the fifth when 2B Tony Renda leadoff with a single to center field. A walk to 1B Shawn Pleffner pushed Renda to second, where he ended up scoring from on a single to right by Marrero. Auburn managed to get just one runner aboard the rest of the game, and that wasn’t until there were two outs in the bottom of the ninth.Meanwhile, a three-run homerun by RF Juan Romero stretched the Scrappers lead to six in the sixth, and they tacked on their final run in the eighth thanks to back-to-back doubles by Vick and Valerio. Mooneyham ended up getting tagged with the loss for Auburn, going five innings and allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits, walking two and striking out four. LHP Geoffrey Davenport (2-3) picked up the win for Mahoning Valley in relief, as he let up two earned runs on two hits over four innings. The Doubledays wrap-up their two-game series with the Scrappers on Sunday, August 12.
