The thirteenth-annual Musselman Triathlon, a swim/bike/run event held in Geneva, will take place July 8 – 10.Musselman Weekend consists of four different races: the Musselman, a half-iron distance race held on Sunday; the mini-Mussel, a sprint distance triathlon on Saturday; the microMussel, a ‘super sprint’ featuring children’s tricycles and Big Wheels-style toys, on Friday evening; and the MusselKids Race, a triathlon for children ages 6-10 and 11-14, also held on Friday evening. The races are staged at Lakefront Park on Friday, and Seneca Lake State Park on Saturday and Sunday.Several iterations of the event are offered, including the AquaBike – a swim/bike-only race that allows athletes to forgo the run portion, popular among older athletes with knee and other injuries; and the DoubleMussel, a special, additional awards category open only to athletes who complete both the sprint on Saturday and the half on Sunday.New for 2016, race organizers have offered a relay option for the sprint and half races, as well.”The truth is, entering our thirteenth year, we have athletes who started racing with us in 2004 who, an age group or two later, may not be able to finish a half quite as easily anymore – but they can’t bear to miss their favorite race,” says race director Richard Clark. “We’re pleased to be able to offer an option to accommodate them this year – and to welcome folks who may be trying out the sport for the first time, as well as anyone else who’s first, or next, Musselman Triathlon experience will be as part of a team.”Early this year officials of Triathlon Business International announced that the Musselman Triathlon has been named ‘Best Small Event’ of 2015 at its TBI/ACTIVE Network Awards Celebration dinner. The Musselman received the most votes in a poll that included other notable races from across the United States, including Montreal’s Esprit Triathlon, Tennessee’s Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon, the Survival of the Shawangunks (New Paltz, NY), SavageMan (Deep Creek Lake, MD), and Portsmouth, Ohio’s American Triple T. Awards were also presented in the ‘Best Large Event’ and ‘Bucketlist’ categories. The Musselman Triathlon has been cited by national sporting publications eleven times in its twelve-year history. The race was selected as one of the ‘Top 100 Races in the World’ by Triathlete Magazine in its most recent ‘Editor’s Choice’ rankings. In 2015 it was cited in an article on top races for new triathletes by Women’s Health Magazine.
