Canvassing in contested 54th Senate race begins Tuesday

The outcome of the Republican primary for the 54th state Senate District race is no clearer today than it was Sept. 13, despite more than an hour of court proceedings Friday afternoon before Judge Frederick Reed.

Just 190 votes separated Canandaigua Supervisor Pam Helming, who is leading the way, and Hopewell businessman Floyd Rayburn, who is right behind, after the polls closed last Tuesday night.

A winner could be determined next week, as each of the Boards of Elections in the six counties that make up the 54th Senate District canvas absentee, special and affidavit ballots, although that doesn’t rule out further court challenges.
