The Penn Yan Police Department has arrested for area youths after a several week investigation into the exchanging of nude photographs on social media. A complaint was made on August 22nd, which began the investigation involving several area residents who were exchanging photos of themselves and others using Facebook Messenger.
The Penn Yan Police Department and Yates County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant in Rock Stream at the residence of a 16-year-old male, which included seizing a number of items — including digital media storage devices.
The investigation revealed that the 16-year-old male had transmitted nude photos of himself to an 11-year-old female in Penn Yan. He was charged with five counts of disseminating indecent material to a minor in the second degree and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.
The investigation continued leading to a 13-year-old male resident of Himrod, who was found to have also transmitted a nude photo of himself to the 11-year-old female resident of Penn Yan. The 13-year-old was charged with the same charges, and a 17-year-old female from Potter was also found to have transmitted images of others to the 11-year-old female.
On September 8th it was found that the 11-year-old female also sent a number of nude images to the other three involved. The 11-year-old female was charged on September 15th.
Disseminating indecent material to a minor in the second degree is a Class E felony. Names are being withheld and all parties involved were issued appearance tickets. The 16- and 17-year-old were charged as adults. They will answer the charges in Penn Yan Village Court.
