No injuries in Odessa-Montour school bus fire

On Tuesday morning at 6:58 am, the Odessa Fire Department was dispatches to Steam Mill Road in the Town of Catherine for a reported school bus fire. According to a release issued by the Odessa Fire Department, firefighters “found a well-involved school bus fire” upon arrival. Firefighters had the fire extinguished quickly but remained on the scene to deal with hot spots for another hour.

Prior to the fire department’s arrival the school bus driver safely evacuated all the occupants of the bus, which included three students and herself. No injuries were reported.

Odessa first assistant fire chief John Jelliff reports that he believes the bus is a total loss but insurance adjusters will make the final determination. He also commended the quick action of the Odessa-Montour Central Schools bus driver who quickly noticed a problem and evacuated the bus occupants as soon as possible.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Odessa Fire Department, Schuyler County Fire Investigation Team, the Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office, and the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control.

The Mecklenburg Fire Company also responded with one tanker and manpower.
