Wayne County woman charged with welfare fraud

Wayne County Sheriff’s deputies say that a Sodus woman was arrested after being accused of welfare fraud. Deputies say 68-year-old Mary Thomas failed to have her grandson go to the Department of Social Services. They say this was required of her, and is part of the program’s rules and regulations.

Deputies say that Thomas’ grandson’s failure to appear resulted in an investigation. This eventually led to the discovery that the grandson, who was on Thomas’ case, had dropped out of school. He had also, months before, moved out of Thomas’ residence.
