Chief Corrections Officer Alice Haskins wins ‘Correction Officer of the Year’ award

The New York State Sheriffs’ Institute has chosen Alice Haskins, Jail Administrator for the Ontario County Jail, as the 2017 Correction Officer of the Year. Sheriff Phil Povero nominated Chief Haskins for the award.

The Correction Officer of the Year Award can be given for an heroic event or in recognition of an outstanding career in the corrections field. Chief Haskins is being honored for the latter.

The late Ontario County Sheriff Gary Stewart hired Alice Haskins as a corrections officer in 1981. Two years later she was appointed to Senior Correction Officer. In 1985, she was promoted to Chief Corrections Officer. Chief Haskins became the first female jail administrator in New York State history. She is currently the longest tenured jail administrator in New York State.

Chief Haskin’s professional accomplishments are numerous. In 1994, Chief Haskins supervised a team of correction officers that achieved the first jail accreditation by the New York State Commission of Correction. To this day Chief Haskins continues to be an assessor for the jail accreditation program, which is now administered by the Sheriffs’ Association.

Chief Haskins led the Sheriffs’ Corrections Division team that directed the planning and construction of a new 291-bed direct supervision county jail that opened in the fall of 2003.

On the state level, Chief Haskins has been one of the primary leaders at the Association’s meetings with the New York State Commission of Correction and the New York State Department of Correctional and Community Services.

“Chief Alice Haskins has been a pioneer in the advancement of professional and cost effective procedures that have resulted in New York State having one of the finest county correctional systems in the United States,” said Sheriff Ron Spike, Yates County, who chaired the Sheriffs’ Institute’s Award’s Selection Committee.
