Make attacking law enforcement a hate crime? NY law would protect first responders

New York senators have proposed a law that would add protections for men and women in uniform under New York’s hate crime laws.

Senators Fred Akshar (R-52nd District), Martin Golden (R-Brooklyn) and Patrick Gallivan (R-59th District) introduced the Community Heroes Protection Act on Monday night, which would make it a hate crime to attack first responders, including police, firefighters and other EMS workers.

The bill is in part a response to the 2012 Christmas Eve ambush killing of two first responders at a Webster house fire. Two volunteer firefighters were killed, and two other first responders were injured.
