Auburn calls on state legislators to support proposed $2 million for water upgrades

Auburn councilors are calling on state legislators to support a proposed $2 million funding measure for upgrades to the water treatment facilities in the city and Owasco.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the $2 million last month to include in the state’s 2017-2018 budget, which is due for adoption by April. The money would be used to help implement ways for both facilities to treat against algae toxins found in drinking water drawn from Owasco Lake. This past summer, the Cayuga County Health Department reported multiple cases where microcystin — a toxin released by harmful blue-green algae blooms — was detected at low levels in drinking water treated by both facilities.
