You knew it wasn’t cheap to smoke in New York State, but these new numbers may surprise you. A study from WalletHub found New Yorkers spend the most on smoking, compared to residents in other states. Doctors hope the price tag will get people to kick the habit, and as a result, save all taxpayers some money.
“Those who are still smoking, if they don’t quit, they are going to have major health care costs that are going to get passed through the rest of the state,” said Dr. Scott McIntosh. He works in the Department of Public Health Sciences at URMC, and is the Director of the Center for a Tobacco-Free Finger Lakes.
How will the savings get passed on to the rest of the state?
