Wegmans, Wal-Mart pay Cayuga County fines for scale violations

Wegmans and Wal-Mart have both paid fines after the Cayuga County Weights and Measures Department found violations with some of the stores’ scales.

Larry G. Roser, director of weights and measures, said January was supermarket scale testing month, where he inspected scales at all 13 supermarkets in the county. In his report to the county Legislature’s Public Works Committee, Roser said both Wal-Mart and Wegmans in Auburn had no Weights and Measures seals on several scales, a violation of Agriculture and Markets Law.

Wegmans was penalized with a $2,000 fine after using three scales that Roser had not tested. Roser said this is the sixth time the Auburn store has violated the law in the last eight years.
