New York State has had more deadly fire cases than any other state in the nation so far in 2017.
There have been 507 deadly house fires across the country so far this year. 30 of them were here in New York; of those, four deadly fires were in the Central New York region. “The numbers across the state are staggering for 2017,” says Niel Rivenburgh, Deputy Director of Emergency Services in Cayuga County.
The most recent fatal fire was Thursday in the Town of Brutus. The Brutus fire and other CNY fatal fires in Scriba and Parish have one thing in common: they’re off the beaten path. In the case of Cayuga County, “We are a highly agricultural, very rural community. We have one central city, some small villages, twenty three towns,” explains Rivenburgh.
