GHS senior Ethan Koczent wins Panther Pitch

The way Ethan Koczent sees it, even the most economically disadvantaged in this community may one day be able to afford a lakeview dining experience.

The Geneva High School senior won The Panther Pitch Entrepreneurial Contest Wednesday night at the Geneva Community Center’s Black Box Theatre. The competition pits GHS economics students against one another in a bid to win over judges with nonprofit and for-profit business proposals.

Koczent’s told judges his lakeview restaurant, Café Link, is a socially and environmentally conscious restaurant that would serve casual fair at flexible prices — in fact, customers would pay in accordance with their abilities, and a meal could be exchanged for an hour of work.

The need for his business, he explained, stems from Geneva’s rapidly rising poverty rate. While a suggested price would offer guidance, those with means have the option of paying more to offset the meals of those less fortunate.
