It looks like something out of a science fiction movie, but officials and employees at F.F. Thompson Hospital are singing the praises of a cleaning “robot” that uses ultraviolet light to destroy pathogens associated with hospital-acquired infections.
The R-D Rapid Disinfector has been used since last September by UR Medicine’s Thompson Health, which includes the hospital and M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center. It also has been a big topic of conversation since then.
“I had an awful lot of explaining to do when I first started using it. It literally took everyone by surprise,” said Jeremy Johnston, a disinfector UV (ultraviolet) tech in Thompson’s environmental services department.
