What’s Up With That?: Bee hotel looking for customers

The buzz on the street is, the bee hotel soon may open for business.

Kaitlin Deutsch, a Gainesville, Florida, native and doctoral student in entomology at Cornell University, is hoping to erect a bee nesting box on a tree in Gibson Street Park as part of a research project.

City Council is expected to consider the request at its meeting on May 4, but members of council’s environmental committee signed off on her research project.

First, an introduction. Deutsch, who has an aunt and uncle who live in Canandaigua, studied at the University of Southern Florida and earned her master’s degree at the University of Oxford.

Bees have been a passion of hers since her junior year of high school, working with honeybees through an internship with the United States Department of Agriculture.
