Wells College receives grant to support sustainable dining operations

Wells College’s Center for Sustainability and the Environment has been awarded a grant to support bioplastics integration in the Aurora campus’s dining operations, enhancing its new food waste composting program.

The grant comes from the New York State Association for Reduction, Reuse and Recycling’s College Council Program. It will allow staff in the dining hall to integrate compostable materials in place of common landfill waste, such as plastic straws and soup cracker packaging.

The dining hall also recently began exclusively using reusable serviceware and bulk condiment dispensers, and separating compost in both the kitchen prep and dish return areas. All its recent efforts will help the college’s dining services reduce contamination of food waste diverted into composting, and continue reducing the amoung of landfill waste it produces.
