FL Institute gets grant to study algae blooms

The Finger Lakes Institute at Hobart and William Smith Colleges has been awarded a $25,000 research grant to assess the role of nitrogen in harmful algae blooms in Honeoye Lake.

Collaborating with the FLI for the study will be Wright State University of Dayton, Ohio.

The grant was announced by the Great Lakes Research Consortium, in cooperation with the state Department of Environmental Conservation and its Great Lakes Program.

Honeoye Lake in Ontario County was selected as a study site due to the frequency and severity of Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) events. More than half of the 11 Finger Lakes experienced an HAB event in 2016.
