Somber anniversary recalled at Canandaigua American Legion

It was more than seven decades ago, but Jack Thompson remembers one day in 1943 like it was yesterday. It’s still painful.

Thompson was 11 years old on that June 1st, walking home for lunch from St. Mary’s School in Canandaigua, when a friend broke the news: “Jack, your brother got killed.” At his home on Pleasant Street, family and neighbors gathered on the porch in grief. Jack’s brother, Richard James Thompson, not yet 21, had been lost at sea.
