Auburn Planning Board approves Franklin Street cellphone tower after court mandate

The city of Auburn was ordered by a U.S. District Court judge to approve a site plan for a new 100-foot Verizon Wireless monopole tower, located at 246 Franklin St.

On Wednesday night, the city planning board approved the site plan and a negative SEQR declaration, the first step in the approval process. The project will go before the city zoning board later this month, on July 24.

Verizon filed a court case against the city of Auburn in August 2016, claiming the city failed to comply with the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and the Federal Communications Commission’s orders, rules and regulations, according to court documents.
