Why Auburn’s school board president is breaking from three-year leadership limit

Auburn Enlarged City School District Board of Education President Mike McCole said he intended to make the 2016-2017 school year his swan song as board leader, but he was asked by other members to stay on.

McCole, who began his fourth year as president upon being re-elected July 5, said some board members with ambitions for a leadership position asked him to stay on due to personal or professional obligations that they have to oversee for the next year.

McCole said he originally was under the impression the board had a policy barring anyone from serving as president beyond three years, but the board discovered there was no official policy — though he noted the Auburn district president has customarily served a maximum of three years. He said he probably would have followed suit had he not been asked to continue.
