DEC plans public meetings on foundry cleanup

Want to learn about the state Department of Environmental Conservation’s plans to clean up contaminated soil in neighborhoods around the former Geneva Foundry?

The DEC has scheduled public information meetings from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Salvation Army, 41 North St.

DEC officials will detail plans to remove up to two feet of soil that became contaminated with lead and arsenic during the years the foundry was in operation (1868 to 1988); removal of that soil; and replacement with new, clean soil.

The first properties to be cleaned up this summer are two where licensed home-based day care programs operate and up to 16 residential properties in the block directly across the street from the former foundry at 23 Jackson St.
