Tompkins County needs a new jail, says study

Tompkins County does not need a new jail facility or new beds to be added to the existing jail, according to a consultant firm tasked with evaluating the existing system.

CGR, a consulting firm based in Rochester, released its final report on Friday and concluded there was no need for an expansion, saying significant reductions in the jail population are highly likely by 2020 and beyond based on current trends.

“There is no convincing rationale for building a new jail, or for expanding the number of beds in the existing one,” the core conclusion of the report states.
