Mexican national arrested in Ithaca pleads guilty to federal charge

A Mexican national living in Ithaca, whose May arrest by federal agents sparked local protest, pleaded guilty Wednesday to possessing a fake alien registration card.

Jose Guzman-Lopez, 32, had been taken into custody May 2 and detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. A counterfeit alien registration card bearing his photo and the registration number of another person was found during his arrest, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Court papers say ICE officers conducted a targeted enforcement operation at 410 Cascadilla St., in Ithaca to arrest Guzman. Following surveillance on the property, officers saw him leave the residence and walk toward Fourth Street, where he was detained.
