The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office reports that a taxi van crash at 2:50 am on Bennie Rd in Cortlandville resulted in two people being killed.
One of those individuals was a student at Tompkins Cortland Community College, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The driver of the taxi was also pronounced dead at the scene.
In a statement from the President’s Office, the school cancelled classes and will be providing counseling for those students impacted by the news.
Deputies say the taxi van was occupied by nine people, left the roadway and struck a utility pole. The vehicle then struck a tree, which resulted in several of the occupants being transported to local hospitals.
In the President’s statement the college said, “Today is a very sad day for Tompkins Cortland Community College. We are left with a heavy heart after learning of the death of one of our students. We share our deepest sympathies with the families and friends of our lost student, as well as those connected to the taxi driver who also perished.”
The statement continued, “As a result of this tragedy, we have canceled classes and the College’s counseling staff is available for anyone in need. The College is also working to assist the families affected by this tragedy in any way possible.”
The victims of the crash have not been identified, and a cause has not been released. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
