An Ontario County jury is expected to hear the confession of the Geneva man accused of shooting boxer Aleem “Hammer” Whitfield.
Several police officers testified Wednesday in the trial of Nelson Mateo Jr. Whitfield also testified, getting into testy exchanges with District Attorney R. Michael Tantillo and saying Mateo didn’t shoot him during the early-morning hours of April 29, 2016.
Whitfield said he was at Rylie J’s, a bar on Seneca Street, and left about 1 a.m. He was walking to Mark’s Pizzeria when he saw a crowd of people at the intersection of Seneca and Linden streets.
“I heard gunshots,” Whitfield testified. “I turned around and got hit in the leg.”
Whitfield said he felt a burning sensation in his leg and dove to the ground to avoid getting hit again. He heard five or six shots.
