A Georgia man was taken into custody on a number of charges after deputies say he fled authorities, which ended with a Wayne County Sheriff’s Office patrol car being stolen and crashed.
Deputies say they tried to pull over Richard Barnes on Wednesday around 11:45 pm on Old Lyons Rd.
They didn’t explain the reasoning for the traffic stop, but noted that after crashing his vehicle — Barnes fled police. He eventually began fighting with authorities and then stole a patrol car.
After the pursuit, Barnes drove the vehicle off the roadway — causing damage to it. According to deputies, Barnes has several prior felony convictions.
He was charged with two counts of fourth-degree grand larceny, second-degree assault, third-degree grand larceny, fourth-degree criminal mischief, two counts of resisting arrest, two counts of obstructing governmental administration, criminal possession of a weapon and several vehicle and traffic violations.
He was remanded to the Wayne County Jail without bail.
