‘It is what it is’: Auburn Zoning Board approves court-mandated cell tower variance

Nearly a month after a U.S. District Court judge ordered the city to make all necessary approvals for a Verizon cellphone tower, the Auburn Zoning Board of Appeals approved a use variance for the 100-foot monopole tower.

On Monday night, the zoning board voted to allow Verizon to build its tower in a residential area, at 246 Franklin St. This was the final step in the approval process, after the city planning board approved a site plan and a negative State Environmental Quality Review declaration on July 5. The zoning board also approved the negative SEQR declaration Monday night.

The vote was unanimous, with Chairman Edward Darrow and member Susan Marteney absent.
