Night shift incentive doubles for Auburn Police Department

The Auburn Police Department’s overnight shift pay incentive has increased significantly under a new union contract, after at least six stagnant years, in an effort to increase the presence of senior officers on the night shifts.

The overnight shift pay increase, known as a shift differential, is additional money police officers receive for working the 4 p.m. to midnight and midnight to 8 a.m. shifts.

The previous two contracts between the New York Finger Lakes Region Police Officers Local 195 and the city of Auburn featured a shift differential pay of an extra 40 cents per hour for the 4 p.m. to midnight shift and an extra 60 cents for the midnight to 8 a.m. shift. The department had not seen an increase in shift differential pay in six years, union Vice President Chris Major said.
