Owasco teen swims across lake, fulfills family tradition

For years, the DeMeritt family has celebrated summer with a special tradition: a 1.2-mile swim across Owasco Lake.

Every other year, the family of eight travels from their home on a U.S. naval base in Spain to spend the summer at a cottage on Owasco Lake. And every other year, the DeMeritts take a boat across the lake and try to swim back to shore.

Those who succeed in reaching the family’s dock get to sign an old wooden oar that hangs in the DeMeritt’s kitchen. Those who don’t must wait another two years to try again.

This summer, on his third attempt, Keenan DeMeritt finally signed the family’s oar.
