Derek Barnish stood on the steps of Memorial City Hall Thursday night, looked out at the crowd of people illuminated by candlelight and said, "My name is Derek and I'm an addict."
"Hi Derek," some people in the crowd said in response.
"But I'm much more than that," he continued. "I'm a father and I'm a son and I'm a friend."
Barnish was one of many Cayuga County Heroin Action Epidemic League (HEAL) members who told a personal story of how addiction has touched their lives on Thursday, which was International Overdose Awareness Day.
