Forgotten resting place in Hopewell gets TLC

Little Philome Benham, son of Barzil and Electa Benham, died Sept. 28, 1826, and was buried in the family cemetery.

He was all of 2 months and 10 days when he died, according to a listing of those buried in Benham Cemetery, until recently a largely forgotten burial ground noted more recently for overgrown brush and debris, if thought of at all.

You have to have a generally good idea where the Benham Cemetery is first in order to find it. One can barely make out the Benham name on the weathered wooden sign marking this final resting place for 130 or so old-time Hopewell residents.

The New Horizons Genealogy website provides the names and dates of those buried here. But in the cemetery, the names on their tombstones are worn and in some cases, those stones are toppled over. And be careful — woodchuck holes dot the property throughout.

That is changing.
