During his 30 years as an emergency room physician at area hospitals, Dr. Craig Hohm treated thousands of patients and — not surprisingly — dealt with a fair amount of job stress and dicey medical situations.
How did he relieve that stress? By building boats.
His latest creation, a traditional, 18-foot wooden replica of a Viking boat of a thousand years ago, has gotten plenty of notice on Keuka Lake over the summer. He also has had it out on Seneca and Cayuga lakes, as well as Lake Ontario.
“This is identical to boats used by the Vikings of that era. It’s the same shape, style and technology,” Hohm said during a recent interview at his home on Coates Road, not far from Keuka College. “It’s the pickup truck of the fjords. It can haul 2,000 pounds worth of gear and is used for everything. They are still used in Scandinavian countries.”
The Viking boat is just one of several vessels Hohm has built over decades. His fascination with boat building started when he was a medical intern.
