Auburn’s water treatment system is overwhelmed.
The heavy rains that have fallen throughout the week have resulted in more than 600,000 gallons of partially treated sewage being released into Northbook Creek at John Walsh Blvd.
It was the second major discharge this week of only partially treated water.
Municipal Utilities Director Seth Jensen told media this morning that there was minimal risk associated with the release, but that reporting by the DEC is typical under these circumstances.
He even added that residents who have sump pumps are contributing to the issues, but not wholly responsible. Instead, it’s an issue that’s being perpetually worsened by aging infrastructure.
DEC alerts can be obtained through a text message or email system, where residents can be alerted anytime there is a release like those in Auburn this week.
