Thursday is deadline for bids on Waterloo’s Main Street School

Looking to buy a school?

The deadline to submit a proposal to buy and redevelop the vacant Main Street School is noon Thursday.

The architecturally-appealing three-story building was opened in 1928 and was last used as a school in June 2014. It has been declared surplus and the sale would include a playground area across the street on West William Street.

The school board could analyze the proposals received and vote on offering a sale contract as early as its Nov. 21 meeting.

The property consists of just over 2.5 acres upon which the 82,160-square-foot school building sits. The building has classrooms, office space, a multi-purpose room, gymnasium, auditorium and a cafeteria.

Criteria to be used by the school board in evaluating the proposals includes the purchase price offered, prior experience with the bidders, the financial solvency of the bidder and the proposed future use of the property.
