Rainy, windy weekend in the Finger Lakes… Lake effect snow Sunday night?

It will definitely be a windy weekend in the Finger Lakes.

While sun dominated the forecast on Friday, some changes are on the way for the region. FLX Weather Meteorologist Drew Montreuil, who appeared in-studio on Friday in a must-watch discussion on forecasting and weather hype, said that no significant region-wide winter weather event expected contrary to some long-range reports run by other local media outlets in recent weeks. But, there is an increasing chance some isolated areas could receive up to 10 inches of lake effect snow by Monday morning.

Montreuil said, “A strengthening area of low pressure will track northeast across southern Ontario, very near to Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. This is the type of scenario that typically brings the strongest winds to our region outside of thunderstorms, tropical systems, and the occasional nor’easter.”

Speaking to the wind levels this weekend, he said that during the day on Saturday — wind gusts could build to the 30 or 35 mph range, but should remain reasonable during the daytime hours.

He says that gusts during the evening and overnight hours could reach the 40 to 50 mph range. Montreuil added, “Gusts to 40 mph will continue through Sunday night and much of Monday before the wind finally begins to slacken.”

There is an outside chance for some in the Finger Lakes to physically ‘see’ snowfall this weekend, but Montreuil doesn’t expect much in the way of precipitation.

The temperatures will be in the 40s for most of the day on Saturday, and as they rise with the southerly winds during the evening hours it will keep precipitation wet.

There is an increasing chance for lake effect snow on Sunday night into Monday morning but where it will fall the heaviest is up for debate at this point….
